Deep knowledge in lighting design, hygge principles, and creating ambient spaces tailored to the Baltic region's unique climate and cultural preferences.
A lighting designer who understands that the Baltic winter isn't something to endure—it's an opportunity to create something beautiful.
Antra's fascination with light began during her studies at Riga Technical University's Faculty of Architecture, where she graduated in 2010. While her classmates focused on building structure, she became obsessed with how different light temperatures affect mood and wellbeing—especially during those long, dark Baltic winters. She wasn't thinking about decoration. She was thinking about survival.
After university, she spent five years working with a Copenhagen-based design firm that pioneered Nordic interior aesthetics. That's where she learned the philosophy behind hygge—the Danish concept of coziness, warmth, and contentment. But she realized something important: hygge designed for Copenhagen doesn't translate directly to Latvia. We're further north. Our winters are longer. Our traditions are different.
In 2015, Antra returned to Latvia and established her own consultancy. She identified a real gap in the market—there weren't lighting designers thinking specifically about Latvian homes, Latvian climate, and Latvian design preferences. Everyone was importing Copenhagen solutions or buying generic LED kits from online retailers.
She started documenting what worked. She studied traditional Latvian design elements and discovered they already contained lighting wisdom from centuries of winters. She tested modern LED technology against candle arrangements. She measured light temperatures and tracked how residents felt at different times of year. Her research has been published in three design journals focused on Baltic aesthetics and seasonal lighting.
Over the past nine years, Antra's work has transformed more than 350 homes throughout Rīga, Jūrmala, Sigulda, and beyond. She's developed a methodology for assessing homes' specific lighting needs based on window orientation, room size, user preferences, and seasonal patterns. She collaborates closely with local architects, electricians, and even candlemakers throughout the region.
Her approach emphasizes sustainability without sacrificing warmth. She believes that effective ambient lighting should be both energy-efficient and emotionally resonant. She's not selling expensive fixtures—she's solving real problems for real people dealing with real Baltic winters.
Now, as Senior Interior Lighting Specialist at seqwws SIA, Antra leads research and content creation on cozy home environments. She's helping people throughout Latvia understand that lighting design isn't luxury—it's essential. Her work has been featured in Baltic lifestyle publications, and she's developed comprehensive guides on everything from choosing the right LED color temperature to arranging candles for maximum visual impact during the dark season.
She's passionate about making this knowledge accessible. Not everyone can hire a designer, but everyone deserves to understand why their living room feels depressing in November and how to fix it.
"Effective ambient lighting should be both energy-efficient and emotionally resonant. The best designs disappear—people just feel better, and they don't know why."
— Antra Liepa
In Latvia, we spend roughly six months dealing with limited daylight. That's not a minor inconvenience—it affects sleep patterns, mood, energy levels, and how we experience our homes. Standard lighting design ignores this reality.
Antra's approach is different. She doesn't start with fixtures or trends. She starts with questions: How many hours of daylight does this room get? What does the space feel like in January? What's the resident's schedule—are they home when it's light or when it's dark? What activities happen here? The answers drive everything that follows.
She combines traditional Latvian design wisdom with contemporary LED technology. She understands candle arrangements aren't decoration—they're functional mood lighting that's been working for centuries. She knows that warm color temperature (around 2700K) isn't just aesthetic preference; it's how our bodies recognize safety and rest.
The result? Homes that feel genuinely warm during the dark season. Not artificially decorated. Not expensive. Just right.
